Ruud Steals The Show Against Benfica

Champions League, Group D
Manchester United 2
Benfica 1
Old Trafford, 27 Sept 2005

Just when it seemed United couldn't buy a second goal in a game, Ruud van Nistelrooy snatched a late winner to seal a 2-1 victory over Benfica in this Champions League Group D tie.

The Dutchman struck with five minutes remaining in a tense finish after Simao Sabrosa's free-kick had earlier cancelled out Ryan Giggs opening goal.

United's fans sang Sir Alex Ferguson's name throughout, a show of unity against the recent wave of criticism following a disappointing September which saw United draw three games and lose one before this victory.

Injuries had forced Ferguson to field an untried combination at the back. His two full-backs, Phil Bardsley and Kieran Richardson, are both 20, while John O'Shea, still only 24 and relatively inexperienced in the centre of defence, partnered Rio Ferdinand in the middle.

After just seven minutes O'Shea failed to deal with a fairly innocuous looking through-ball, letting it slip under his foot to allow Fabrizio Miccoli through on goal. His shot was deflected wide and it took a reflex save from Edwin van der Sar to deny defender Ricardo Rocha's header from the resulting corner.

One blessing this season has been the return of Ruud van Nistelrooy's goals, he has six so far this term and almost found his seventh with a brilliant effort on the volley as United gathered some attacking momentum.

Bardsley misjudged his cross shot across the edge of the area. Van Nistelrooy somehow controlled the ball, swivelled and smacked his shot off the crossbar.

Sir Alex was not happy with the level of criticism directed at his choice of tactics in recent weeks. This is what he told one reporter after the Benfica game...
Reporter: Alex, the tactics seemed different tonight with Scholes further forward…
Ferguson: We played exactly the same way as we did on Saturday [4-4-2].
Reporter: Could you explain your thinking behind the tactical change over the last week?
Ferguson: No. I'm not explaining anything. You have your own ideas about the game, carry on. I'm not going to blunt your imagination.
The vocal disapproval from fans just three days earlier during the defeat to Blackburn, though perhaps misdirected with chants of 'attack, attack, attack', was borne out of frustration at United's recent form.

It was a far different mood at Old Trafford for this game. The recent sniping in the press suits nobody's agenda more than the media. That ill-feeling was swept aside after fifteen minutes when every Red in the ground, led by the Stretford End, rose to sing 'stand up if you love Fergie'.

The football this season may not have been the most entertaining seen at Old Trafford down the years, but this reaction was an indication that supporters feel Ferguson is still the man to cultivate another great team.

United's formation - so much a talking point recently - was a clearly defined 4-4-2. Wayne Rooney's absence through suspension led to Ryan Giggs being drafted in on the left, only his second start this season. And it was the Welshman who got United's opener.

Cristiano Ronaldo was fouled 25 yards out with ten minutes remaining in the first half and Giggs lined up an inswinging set-piece. His shot deflected off Benfica right-back Nelson and beat Jose Filipe Moreira at his far post.

Ferguson departed for the home dressing room at half time a much happier manager than he had been at the same point on Saturday; his team winning 1-0, creating goalscoring chances, the supporters still on his side.

His joy wasn't to last long in the second half, though. On the hour, Alan Smith's full-blooded determination went against him. Stretching to make a challenge on Simao Sabrosa on the edge of the box, he conceded a free kick and was subsequently booked.

Talking Reds : Phil Bardsley

"I was very impressed with Phil against Benfica. He overlapped well, got in some good crosses and was one of the most determined performers I've seen in ages. He looks be a more than capable back-up this year."

Sabrosa struck a perfect curling free-kick, dinking the ball over the United wall so that van der Sar saw the ball late and was unable to stop it nestling in his top right corner.

United were still inventive and the fans were firmly behind Ferguson's men. Immediately, Ronaldo chested down a poor clearance from Luisao and blasted a volley from a tight angle inside the penalty area. Moreira reacted quickly and pushed the ball onto the post.

Scholes was then inches away from the vital touch on Bardsley's excellent low cross from the right. The Reds were throwing everything at Ronald Koeman's stubbornly resolute defence, but as the clocked ticked down, there was a clear air of tension around Old Trafford.

Step forward Ruud van Nistelrooy, so prolific in European competition for the Reds. It may not have been the most sublime goal the Dutchman will ever score, but it may prove a catalyst in turning around the form of this United team. Van Nistelrooy, poaching two yards out following Giggs' corner, scrambled home his 38th goal in 43 Champions League games for the Reds.

Before the game, his manager said he always hopes the crucial chance in game falls at the Dutchman's feet and, at the vital moment, it did. It was a victory United desperately needed, and a goal van Nistelrooy definitely deserved.

K
embali lagi di ruangan Artist of the week...Hehehe. Kali ini menampilkan the cutest male singer of all time (for me)...Jason Mraz. Sebenarnya start suka kat dia bila dia mula nyanyi lagu The Remedy. Pastu bila kuar single baru dia, You and I both, suka giler2. Bila tgk rupa dia...geram...cute bangat!Lelaki idaman gitu...hahaha.Anyway, here are some of his pics and bio. By the way, enjoy the song...my fave 'You and I Both'

Jason Mraz is a southern California wanna-be born in Virginia to a brief stint in New York studying the ancient art of musical theatre. Jason began playing guitar late in life, 18, at Strawberry Fields and on the streets of Manhattan. during that period of experimentation and transformation, Jason was inspired by a psychic in Central Park to dream the way he does today. The lesson offered to him was "to avoid the questioner and go with what you know. Get experience youth, he said" and following this new rule as well as his instincts to sing he eventually made his way out west where he has spent the last two years in San Diego learning from the best about sleep, peace, and poetry in song.

Jason has always had a vision to see how songs could be interpreted if left only to the listener to decide. What began as "songs to sleep to", a collection of songs for an album fit to play during one's dreamlife, has now evolved into a moving wide awake exploration for Jason. Since his ridiculous move out west (according to his Virginia native family), he has shared venues with Bob Dylan, Paula Cole, Jewel, and David Gray to name a few.
